Walt Mossberg on Windows 7

Friday, 21 August 2009 08:46 by Paul Taylor

Time to upgrade to Windows 7, 64 bit version. As always before I do anything like this (especially as you have to do a clean install when going from Vista 32 bit to Windows 7 64 bit), it is always good to do a bit of research on the subject. I stumbled across a new character in town, very funniny!

The Law of Demeter

Monday, 17 August 2009 05:13 by Paul Taylor

The Law of Demeter (LoD), or Principle of Least Knowledge, is a design guideline for developing software, particularly object-oriented programs.

The guideline can be succinctly summarized as “Only talk to your immediate friends.” The fundamental notion is that a given object should assume as little as possible about the structure or properties of anything else (including its subcomponents).

Read more here along with Phil Haak's take on the subject around "counting the dots"

Covariance and contravariance in C# 4.0

Sunday, 2 August 2009 23:28 by Paul Taylor

A collegue of mine recently sent out out a link to talk by the C# lead architect Anders Hejlsberg. Anders very elequently dicusses and describes covariance and contravariance in C# 4.0. This subject somewhat puzzled me the first time I came across these terms, so I thought I should share this with the wider community.

As .NET 4.0 becomes available, you will need to fully understand the limitations and why the new "in/out" keywords with generic types have been included in the C# language.

The talk is only around 15 minutes long and well worth a visit
