LINQ to SQL - RIP

Friday, 31 October 2008 03:06 by Paul Taylor
So the day has arrived which any people have been thinking about and seeing coming. MS is going to focus it's efforts on the the ADO.NET entity framework and LINQ to SQL will go they way of "not quite good enough for us" technologies.
A quote from the ADO.NET team blog states... "We’re making significant investments in the Entity Framework such that as of .NET 4.0 the Entity Framework will be our recommended data access solution for LINQ to relational scenarios"
Having not used LINQ to SQL in ernest, this is not a big deal for me but I see more storm clouds coming from the community and the many people who have embraced this. Time will tell whether this is a good judgment cal....
Our well respected Ayende makes a few good points...

The Streets - back to basics

Monday, 27 October 2008 13:32 by Paul Taylor

I have to say that Mr Mike Skinner and the team have just put out a fabulous album and his little performance on the BBC proms was great. Check it out here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/electricproms/

I read some not too good reviews about the last album, but to be honest it is all about a journey that the guys are taking. Fame and fortune!? How easy it is to let that flow into your music and make you want to talk about it right!

Having been "around the block" over the past few years, following the dance scene since the early days, I just love the rawness of the guys vocals and it reminds me of the last 10+ years of my life. I wonder if many other people llistening to the various tracks find themselves remanising about times, places and people like do? I am sure the answer would be yes.

Mike - I take my hat off to you. Keep plugging away with the things that come from your heart and success will continue. Ingore the crap coments that come your way, people are just jealous and want to critisicse people who find themselves doing something that they love. Nice one.... stay blinded by lights....

Sony NWZ-A828K - No WMV DRM support

Thursday, 23 October 2008 11:31 by Paul Taylor

I like my sony player. In fact I think it is totally cool and it makes a refreshing change to be using a walkman and not one of the old trusty IPods.

But... I just noticed that Sony have bought out an update to their players that allow you to watch DRM protected WMV files. Good for things like the excellent BBC iPlayer and alike, but this is not supported on my player.

So being relatively tech savy, I know that surely all Sony have to do is release me a "firmware" update and bingo - I can start to actually use and watch some video content (without having to use some random conversion tool to get the files into MPEG format). Had a little look round the web to see if I could find such a thing and in the end I just sent an email out to Sony to ask if they were making this available.

What I find interesting is that on there home page they seem to suggest that my player already has WMV support, err... no it doesn't!

I bought the player only a few months ago and surely this is a "almost new" player right? A firmware update is surely on it's way to keep me as a happy customer? Fly the flag for Sony and there excellent build quality and superb sound quality?!

Nope, there is no such thing. Here is the response I got from Sony:

Summary of your enquiry:

 Response () 13/10/2008 11.20 AM
Dear Mr Taylor

Thank you for your recent e-mail received on 11/10/2008 10.02 AM.

In response to this, I can confirm that there are currently no plans to release a firmware update to allow this level of functionality on your Sony NWZ-A828K.

Regrettably, I am unable to confirm if this is subject to change as Sony customer services does not receive advance notification of such updates to its products.

I can only recommend referring to the below web link regularly. When updates are made available for this particular model, they will be listed on this web page:

http://support.sony-europe.com/dna/wm/nwvp/nwvp.aspx?site=odw_en_GB&m=NWZ-A828

I am sorry for any disappointment that this response may cause.

Yours sincerely
